Victory for Modolo in the 1st stage of the Tour of Croatia.
UAE Team Emirates' athlete was the fastest on the arrival in Koprivnika (start from Osijek, 227 km), obtaining his first seasonal victory, the 42nd in career: he preceded Grosu, Marini, Page and Nizzolo (photo Bettini).
Modolo is the leader of the general classification.
The twenty-nine years old Italian cyclist completed in the best way the work from the team of the President Matar, which unfortunately could not rely on Mirza, who suffered for fever during the night and did not succeed to be at the start.
UAE Team Emirates controlled the breakaway of five riders which led the stage in the central part and then managed to neutralize the attack attempts on the climb of Ludbreg, the only hill of the course (summit at -21,5km).
Modolo described his victory: "Team was perfect in leading me to the front positions in the approach of the last kilometer and in avoiding problems in the last two bends.
Ferrari began his role as pilot-fish in the final 1000 meters and he was great as usual: he knows which is the best speed and when it's time to launch the sprint: timing is very important in sprints on long straight, as today one.
I was the first to start the sprint, I felt my legs were very good and I avoided to be overtaken by the opponents.
This victory is very good in the approach of the Giro d'Italia".
Sports director Maini pointed out how important was the good performance of the whole team: "Niemiec, Polanc and Ravasi worked in the head of the race for controlling and bridging the gap from the breakaway, receiving also the support from other teams; Guardini and Ferrari acted as an impressive lead-out train for the winning sprint of Modolo.
Durasek saved energies in view of tomorrow stage, with the summit arrival of Biokovo".

Prima tappa e vittoria per Sacha Modolo nel Tour of Croatia.
Il velocista dell'UAE Team Emirates non ha avuto rivali sul traguardo di Koprivnika (partenza da Osijek, 227 km), cogliendo il primo successo stagionale e il 42° in carriera: battuti Grosu, Marini, Page e Nizzolo (foto Bettini).
Modolo è anche al comando della classifica generale.
Il ventinovenne veneto ha finalizzato al meglio il lavoro della squadra del presidente Matar, in gara con solo 7 effettivi a causa di un attacco febbrile che ha costretto Mirza a rinunciare alla corsa.
La formazione emiratina si è mossa in gruppo con il giusto equilibrio per tenere sotto controll una fuga di cinque atleti nella parte centrale della tappa e per tenere il plotone compatto sull'unica ascesa di giornata, lo strappo di Ludbreg a 21,5 km dal traguardo.
E' Modolo a descrivere la volata: "La squadra è stata impeccabile nel tenermi nelle prime posizioni in vista dell'ultimo chilometro, superando senza problemi le ultime due curve. E' poi entrato in azione Ferrari: l'intesa con Roberto è come sempre ottima, sa quale velocità tenere e quando lanciarmi, la tempistica è molto importante quando gli sprint si disputano, come oggi, su lunghi rettilinei.
Ho lanciato per primo la volata, sentivo di avere energie nelle gambe e ho evitato di essere rimontato.
Questo successo è un buon tassello nel percorso di avvicinamento al Giro d'Italia".
Il ds Maini, alla guida della squadra assieme al collega Vicino, ha sottolineato l'importanza del lavoro di tutto il team: "Niemiec, Polanc e Ravasi hanno condotto l'inseguimento ai fuggitivi, trovando anche la collaborazione di altre squadre, mentre Guardini e Ferrari sono stati insuperabili nel pilotare Modolo nello sprint vincente.
Sacha ha valorizzato una prestazione perfetta da parte di tutti i suoi compagni di squadra.
Abbiamo preservato Durasek in vista della tappa di domani, con l'impegnativo arrivo in salita di Biokovo".
