Today was the 4th stage in which the Moroccan champion Anass Ait el Abdia participated as a World Tour cyclist: he lived a lively unforgettable day.
Breakaway, virtual red jersey, counter-attacks and a wrong direction: when he'll be back to Morocco, Anass will need a lot of time to narrate all the events in which he was protagonist in the 4th stage of the Tour of Oman, 118 km from Yiti to the Ministry of Tourism which was won by Kristoff and in which Kump obtained the 5th place.
He'll begin his narration describing how the early kilometers of the course were demanding, because of a climb immediately after the start and a hilly road on which he went clear from the bunch together with other 8 riders at km 8, fulfilling the request by sports director Pedrazzini of joining breakaway in which there would have been BMC's riders.
In the breakaway, together with Ait el Abdia, there were Kung (BMC), Kangert, Denifl, Domont, Doubey, Eaton, Jungels and Teunissen: their maximum advantage on the peloton was 1'50", which was enough to give the virtual red jersey to Ait el Abdia, who was 59" behind the leader Hermans in the general classification at the start of the stage.
On the final hill, at 13 km to the arrival, only three riders (Ait el Abdia, Domont and Kung) remained in the breakaway and the Team UAE's cyclist tried a counter-attack, before the favourites group, which was thinned to 20 riders (Rui Costa and Marcato were in this group), bridged the gap.
The day of the Moroccan champion was still not over: he followed an attack by Zeits in the very final kilometers, however the duo took a wrong road and their chance of obtaining a top result vanished (Ait el Abdia reached the arrival in 54th place at 1'35" to the winner.
In the approach to the arrival, the head group was joined by 30 riders who bridged the gap under the work by Katusha, who led Kristoff to the sprint. Kump too succeeded in coming back to the front of the race and he obtained the 5th place in the sprint.
Rui Costa, who reached the arrival in the front group, is 2nd (+5" to Hermans) in the general classification, waiting for the queen stage with summit arrival at Jebel Akhdar.
"I simply try to do what my sports director asks me to do and I try to do it in the best possible way - Ait el Abdia explained - today my shape was very good and I exploited it for going clear in a breakaway in the early kilometers, which were very demanding.
Once I was in the front of the race, I managed my energies and I was still enough brilliant to try to attack again in the final kilometers.
Unfortunately Zeits took a wrong road and our attempts was over, however today remains a day to remember and I really hope there will be many others".

Alla quarta tappa da corridore di una squadra World Tour, il campione marocchino Anass Ait el Abdia ha vissuto una giornata memorabile per intensità.
Fuga, maglia rossa virtuale, contrattacchi, un'azione da finisseur e una strada sbagliata: al rientro in Marocco, Ait el Abdia dovrà prendersi un po' di tempo per raccontare tutto quanto lo ha visto protagonista nella 4^frazione del Tour of Oman, la Yiti-Ministry of Tourism di 118 km vinta in volata da Kristoff, con il 5° posto del velocista del Team UAE, Marko Kump.
Anass potrà iniziare il racconto della giornata sottolineando la complicata partenza della corsa, con un avvio in salita, seguito da strada vallonata: rispettando in pieno le consegne del ds Pedrazzini, che aveva chiesto la presenza in avanscoperta di un corridore del Team UAE qualora avessero dovuto andare in fuga atleti della BMC, il campione del Marocco si è unito a un attacco di 9 atleti, nato di forza al km 8 in un tratto di strada impegnativo.
La fuga, nella quale pedalavano, oltre ad Ait el Abdia, anche Kung (BMC), Kangert, Denifl, Domont, Doubey, Eaton, Jungels e Teunissen, ha toccato i 110" di vantaggio sul gruppo, dando al corridore del Team UAE l'onore di vestire virtualmente la maglia rossa di leader della classifica generale, dato che tra i fuggitivi era quello con il minor distacco dal capoclassifica Hermans (+59").
Il drappello degli attaccanti si è ridotto a sole tre unità (Ait el Abdia, Domont e Kung) sull'ultima salita di giornata, a 13 km dal traguardo, e il corridore del Team UAE ha provato un allungo, prima che sulla testa della corsa si riportasse un gruppetto composto dai 20 migliori corridori, nel quale erano presenti anche Rui Costa e Marcato.
La frenetica tappa di Anass non era comunque ancora terminata, dato che a una manciata di chilometri dal traguardo l'atleta di Casablanca si è lanciato in un contrattacco assieme a Zeits: il duo ha però preso una direzione errata a una svolta, perdendo ogni possibilità di successo (Ait el Abdia ha tagliato il traguardo in 54^posizione a 1'35" dal vincitore).
In vista del traguardo, sul gruppetto di testa è rientrata una trentina di atleti, favoriti dal lavoro del team Katusha per Kristoff, e tra di essi pedalava anche un tenace Kump, capace di conquistare il 5° posto di tappa, nonostante in volata abbia dovuto fare i conti con il vento.
Tagliando il traguardo con il gruppo di testa, Rui Costa ha mantenuto il 2° posto nella graduatoria generale (+5" da Hermans), per la quale sarà decisivo l'arrivo in salita della 5^frazione a Jebel Akhdar.
"Semplicemente provo a fare quello che è più utile alla squadra e che mi viene chiesto dal direttore sportivo e provo a farlo al meglio - ha spiegato Ait el Abdia - La tappa di oggi è stata molto impegnativa, soprattutto perché i primi chilometri non lasciavano respiro.
Ho una condizione molto buona, ho provato a sfruttarla per inerirmi nella fuga e, una volta trovatomi in avanscoperta, ho gestito le energie. Nel finale ho avuto così ancora la forza di provare ad attaccare, ma l'imprevisto dello sbaglio di strada ha vanificato gli sforzi.
E' stata comunque una giornata davvero piena di eventi, spero possano essercene molte".
