Ferrari sale sul podio, 3° allo sprint

Ferrari on the podium, 3rd place in the sprint

22 ottobre 2016

The victory in the 1st stage of the Tour of Hainan, 88,3 km with start and arrival in Wangning Xinglong, was assigned in a mass sprint, despite the presence on the course, at 15 km to the arrival, of a short hill (4th category, 6,8% average degree), which however did not prevent the sprinters to battle for the success.

LAMPRE-MERIDA's main sprinter was Ferrari, who achieved to be on the podium (photo 7Cycling) of the stage showing his shiny moustaches: he crossed the finish line in 3rd position, behind the winner Andriato and Walscheid (2nd).

The early kilometers in the stage were characterized by the battle for joining the first escape, which succeeded to went clear after 30 km in the race.
Four attackers (De Rossi, Correia, Lukyanov, Zhao Jingbiao) had a maximum advantage of 2'45", because the bunch always controlled them, especially thanks to the work by Xu Gang in the front positions of the peloton.

The breakaway was neutralized at 8 km to the arrival and then the mass sprint followed: Ferrari launched his Merida bike at full speed at -50 meters following Walscheid, however he could not overtake him and Andriato, who won the stage.

Sports director Pedrazzini commented: "Our goal was to try to obtain a top result from Ferrari, we were close to the best result, however the third place could be fairly satisfying.
Xu Gang's work in the fron the the peloton was very important".
